Sony's Shifting PC Gaming Strategy: No More Mandatory PSN Accounts, But Incentives Remain
Sony is dropping the PlayStation Network (PSN) account linking requirement for several of its PC games, starting with Marvel's Spider-Man 2. This follows player feedback expressing dissatisfaction with the previous mandate. Games like Marvel's Spider-Man 2, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, God of War Ragnarök, and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered will no longer necessitate a PSN account for gameplay. The impact on other single-player PC ports remains unclear.
However, Sony isn't abandoning its push for PC gamer integration into its ecosystem. Connecting a PSN account will now unlock in-game bonuses, including early suit unlocks in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and resource bundles for titles such as God of War Ragnarök. These incentives are detailed below:
PlayStation PC In-Game Content Incentives:
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: Early access to the Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and the Miles Morales 2099 Suit.
- God of War Ragnarök: The Armor of the Black Bear set (previously only available in New Game+) and a resource bundle (500 Hacksilver and 250 XP).
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered: +50 points to activate bonus features, unlocking extras including Ellie's Jordan's Jacket skin.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: Access to the Nora Valiant outfit.
Sony plans to collaborate with PlayStation Studios developers to introduce further benefits for PSN account holders on PC. The company also highlights that account linking provides access to features like trophy support and friend management.
The reception to Sony's PC gaming foray has been mixed. While many welcome the availability of previously console-exclusive titles, the PSN requirement drew significant criticism, particularly in regions where PSN isn't accessible. This was notably exemplified by the brief, and ultimately reversed, PSN account requirement for Helldivers 2 on Steam last year. This latest shift suggests Sony is adapting its strategy to better accommodate the PC gaming community.
