HBO is reportedly in advanced negotiations with acclaimed actor John Lithgow, known for his role as Lord Farquaad in Shrek, to portray the iconic Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in their upcoming Harry Potter series. While HBO remains tight-lipped, Variety suggests Lithgow is nearing a deal to secure the coveted role. This development follows previous reports naming Mark Rylance as a top contender for the part.
"We understand the significant interest surrounding this project and the resulting speculation," an HBO spokesperson stated. "As pre-production continues, we will only confirm casting decisions upon finalizing agreements."
Lithgow's extensive filmography includes roles in The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, Footloose, Dexter, and The Crown, showcasing his remarkable range and versatility.
Despite numerous reports indicating progress, the casting process remains largely confidential. HBO is actively seeking actors to fill the roles of Harry, Hermione, and Ron, having reportedly already cast Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.
The series will prioritize British talent, mirroring the films. This approach is perhaps unsurprising, given author J.K. Rowling's reported involvement in the casting process.
Announced in April 2023, the Harry Potter adaptation promises a faithful retelling of the novels, aiming for a more comprehensive narrative than the film series allowed. The series will be helmed by Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, producers of Succession, with Mylod also contributing writing experience from Game of Thrones.
