Industry insider AusilMV, known for accurate game leaks, suggests that Season 5 of MultiVersus could be its final season if it fails to perform well. A source close to the development team reportedly indicated that Season 5 is a last-ditch attempt to revive the game's flagging popularity. While this remains a rumor, the situation is undeniably precarious.
The game's initial launch in 2022 saw explosive success, peaking at 153,000 concurrent Steam players. However, a dramatic 99% player drop followed shortly thereafter, leading Warner Bros. Games to shut down the project in June 2023, controversially labeling it an "open beta test." A relaunch with updates occurred in May 2024, yet the game has struggled to recapture its initial momentum.
Season 5, launching in early February, represents a critical juncture for MultiVersus. It may be the developers' final opportunity to reignite player interest and prevent the game's complete closure.
The game's relaunch strategy, framing the initial 2022 release as a "beta," proved controversial. Despite initial player enthusiasm, the abrupt shutdown in June 2023 angered many, particularly those who had purchased the premium edition. The upcoming season will determine if this relaunch can ultimately succeed.
