The highly anticipated Lunar Remastered Collection is set to launch on April 18th, bringing the classic JRPG duology to modern consoles and PC. Developed by Game Arts and published by GungHo Online Entertainment, this remaster will feature updated visuals, a re-recorded soundtrack, and numerous quality-of-life improvements.
The collection, announced during a 2024 Sony State of Play, will be available on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, with backward compatibility for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Physical copies will also be released in select North American and European stores.
This remaster includes several modern conveniences, such as widescreen support, enhanced pixel art, and high-definition cutscenes. For purists, a classic mode replicates the original PS1-era visuals. Further enhancements include fully voiced dialogue in English and Japanese, along with newly added French and German subtitles. Gameplay is streamlined with a combat speed-up feature and an auto-battle option with customizable party strategies. These features, now common in remasters of older JRPGs (similar to Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake and the upcoming Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster), aim to modernize the experience without sacrificing the nostalgic charm.
The Lunar Remastered Collection's commercial success remains to be seen, but the previous success of the Grandia HD Collection, a collaboration between the same developers and publisher, suggests a positive outlook. This release continues the trend of beloved JRPGs receiving a second life on contemporary platforms.
