Mortal Kombat 1's Ed Boon Hints at Future DLC Following T-1000's Arrival
Ed Boon, chief creative officer of Mortal Kombat 1, recently shared a sneak peek of the upcoming T-1000 Terminator's Fatality on social media, simultaneously teasing "future DLC." This announcement coincided with the release of the Conan the Barbarian guest character and the revelation that Mortal Kombat 1 has surpassed five million copies sold.
Boon tweeted a short video showcasing one of the T-1000's Fatalities, a nod to the iconic truck chase scene from Terminator 2. The accompanying tweet, "With Conan getting into player’s hands, we are excited to keep trucking forward with future DLC!", sparked significant speculation within the Mortal Kombat community.
While the phrase could simply refer to the imminent release of the T-1000, many fans interpret it as a hint towards additional DLC characters beyond the current Khaos Reigns expansion. The T-1000 is the final character in this expansion, following the additions of Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan. The possibility of a third DLC pack, or "Kombat Pack 3," has been a topic of much discussion, particularly given the game's sales success.
Warner Bros. Discovery's continued investment in the Mortal Kombat franchise further fuels this speculation. CEO David Zaslav recently stated the company intends to focus on four key game titles, with Mortal Kombat being one of them. Adding to the intrigue, Boon previously confirmed that NetherRealm had already chosen its next game three years prior, while promising continued support for Mortal Kombat 1.
While many anticipate a third installment in the Injustice fighting game franchise, no official announcements have been made by NetherRealm or Warner Bros. The development history—Injustice: Gods Among Us (2013), Injustice 2 (2017), Mortal Kombat 11 (2019), and Mortal Kombat 1 (2023)—suggests a pattern of alternating between the two franchises, although this pattern was broken with the release of Mortal Kombat 1.
In a previous interview with IGN, Boon alluded to various factors influencing this decision, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to a newer Unreal Engine (Unreal Engine 4 for Mortal Kombat 1, compared to Unreal Engine 3 for Mortal Kombat 11). However, Boon explicitly confirmed that the Injustice franchise remains a possibility for future development. The ambiguity surrounding NetherRealm's next project, coupled with Boon's recent cryptic tweet, leaves fans eagerly anticipating further news regarding future DLC and the studio's next major title.
