Nintendo Responds to CES 2025 Switch 2 Leaks
Nintendo has issued an unusual statement regarding the recent flurry of Switch 2 leaks stemming from CES 2025. The company confirmed that the images circulating online are not official, a simple yet significant acknowledgement given Nintendo's typically tight-lipped approach to leaks. This is especially noteworthy because Nintendo did not officially participate in this year's CES.
Rumors and leaks surrounding the Switch 2 have been prevalent since late 2024, coinciding with reports of the console entering mass production. One prominent leak involved accessory manufacturer Genki displaying a purported Switch 2 replica at CES. Pictures of this model quickly spread across social media.
Following an inquiry from the Sankei Shimbun, Nintendo officially labeled Genki's model as "not official." The company emphasized its absence from CES 2025, thereby clarifying that any Switch 2 imagery originating from the show lacks official endorsement.
Genki's Replica: Accurate or Not?
While Nintendo offered no opinion on the accuracy of Genki's replica, its design aligns with several existing leaks and rumors. The most noticeable differences from the original Switch are its slightly larger size and an extra button below the right Joy-Con's home button, labeled "C," with an unknown function. Genki CEO Eddie Tsai, while unable to clarify the "C" button's purpose, did mention other purported details, including magnetically attaching Joy-Cons and their potential use as mouse controls – claims echoed by other sources.
Nintendo's previous announcements indicated a Switch 2 reveal within fiscal year 2024 (ending March 31, 2025). With approximately 80 days remaining, anticipation remains high. A retail release is unlikely before the second quarter of 2025, with a rumored price point around $399.
