The PlayStation 5 disc drive is currently available at select US retailers, including Amazon and PlayStation Direct, as of mid-January 2025. However, given recent trends, this limited stock is unlikely to last.

The scarcity stems from the release of the PS5 Digital Edition in 2020, the first Sony console without a built-in disc drive, followed by the disc-less PS5 Pro in 2024. Both the PS5 Pro and the Slim models offer a degree of modularity, allowing users to purchase and install a separate disc drive. This has led to significant demand, particularly in the US, where the official Sony disc drive has been in short supply for an extended period.

While some retailers have restocked, the shortage persists. As of January 15th, Amazon US and PlayStation Direct offer the drive at its MSRP of $79.99. A third-party Walmart seller is also listed, but at a 50% markup ($122) and with extremely limited stock.

With continued out-of-stock status at major retailers like Walmart, GameStop, and Best Buy, the US shortage shows no immediate signs of ending. The duration of this scarcity remains uncertain.
