Robert Eggers, fresh off his critically acclaimed gothic horror film Nosferatu, is set to direct a sequel to the beloved fantasy classic, Labyrinth. Variety reports that Eggers will write and direct this new installment to Jim Henson's 1986 dark fantasy film starring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. He'll be collaborating on the script with Sjón, his writing partner on The Northman. While a sequel was previously in development with Scott Derrickson attached, TriStar and Jim Henson Pictures have opted to move forward with Eggers' vision.
The original *Labyrinth*, released in 1986, featured Bowie as the Goblin King Jareth, who kidnaps Connelly's baby brother. Connelly's character then embarks on a perilous journey through a fantastical world, aided by a cast of memorable Henson puppets, to rescue her sibling. This isn't Eggers' only upcoming project. He's also directing a werewolf film titled Werwulf, aiming for a Christmas 2026 release. Details are scarce, but the film is set in 13th-century England and will feature dialogue in the Old English of that period. One can safely assume werewolf transformations will be involved.
Eggers' Nosferatu, a remake of F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent film, was released last Christmas. Set in 19th-century Germany, the film follows a real estate agent whose dealings with a mysterious Transylvanian count unleash dark, vampiric horrors upon him and his wife.
Nosferatu received four Oscar nominations this year, including Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling. Read our review here.
