Ryan Reynolds has revealed pitching an R-rated Star Wars concept to Disney, though the project's future remains uncertain.
The Deadpool star discussed some of his non-Marvel ventures during an appearance on The Box Office Podcast. While he didn't specify whether Disney greenlit the pitch or if it would be a film or series, he did outline his creative vision for such a project.
"I pitched to Disney, saying 'Why don't we develop an R-rated Star Wars property?'" Reynolds shared. "It wouldn't necessarily focus on the main franchise characters - there's a vast universe of personalities to explore. I'm not suggesting gratuitous content. An R-rating could serve as an emotional vehicle, and I've always wondered why studios hesitate to take such creative risks."

Reynolds boasts remarkable success with R-rated films, having been instrumental in three of the top five highest-grossing R-rated movies: Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and this year's record-breaking Deadpool & Wolverine. The latter, co-starring Hugh Jackman, currently holds the title as the highest-grossing R-rated film ever with over $1.3 billion in global revenue (per Box Office Mojo).
"That doesn't mean I'd want to appear in it - that wouldn't be the right approach," Reynolds clarified. "My interest lies in producing, writing, or working behind the scenes. These iconic franchises thrive on strategic scarcity and surprise. While Disney+ makes scarcity difficult for Star Wars, there's still room for unexpected storytelling."

Reynolds remains committed to his Marvel commitments, though he's expressed reservations about Deadpool joining the Avengers. Reports indicate he's been advocating for a Deadpool/X-Men crossover project behind the scenes.
Regarding his Star Wars concept, fans might need to practice patience. For more on Disney's galactic expansion plans, details about Shawn Levy's (a frequent Reynolds collaborator) Star Wars: Starfighter project are emerging. While information remains limited, we do know Barbie star Ryan Gosling has been cast in a lead role.
