Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nearing Release, Says Writer

Author : Caleb Update:May 06,2025

Are you eagerly awaiting Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars movie? You're not alone! The acclaimed director of *Deadpool & Wolverine* is still on track to deliver this highly anticipated film, and we have a fresh update straight from the pen of its writer, Jonathan Tropper.

"I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant, expressing his enthusiasm for the project. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

While much about the film remains shrouded in mystery, one key detail we know is that it will be set after *The Rise of Skywalker*. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has shed some light on its timeline, stating, "That’s also in the future. It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to delve into the post-*Rise of Skywalker* era.

In another interview with Deadline, Kennedy also confirmed that Levy's movie will hit theaters after 2026's *The Mandalorian and Grogu*. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she elaborated. Additionally, exciting rumors suggest that Ryan Gosling is set to star in this new venture.

Tropper’s optimistic words offer hope that Levy’s film is progressing well. However, fans will need to exercise patience, as the earliest we can expect to see it is in the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027.

Disney hasn't released a Star Wars film since the controversial *Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker* in 2019. Since then, several projects have been canceled, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a planned trilogy from the *Game of Thrones* showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Moreover, a Star Wars movie initially slated for late 2026 was removed from Disney's calendar in November.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm announced three new Star Wars feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni, set in his Mando-verse; a *Dawn of the Jedi* movie led by James Mangold; and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey post-*The Rise of Skywalker*.

The Obaid-Chinoy project has seen its share of changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently stepping down after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a focal point for Disney's future plans, with reports indicating she will feature in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.

And that's not all Disney has in store for Star Wars fans. Late last year, it was revealed that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which, contrary to initial reports, will not be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga.

The next Star Wars content to grace your screens will be Season 2 of *Andor*, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode launch. Get ready for more thrilling adventures in the Star Wars universe!
