Sony Patents New DualSense Gun Accessory

Summary

  • Sony's latest patent unveils a novel gun-style attachment for the DualSense controller, promising enhanced gameplay immersion.
  • This attachment cleverly integrates an aiming sight between the R1 and R2 buttons, boosting realism in shooting games.

A recently published Sony patent details a fascinating new controller accessory: a gun-style attachment transforming the PlayStation DualSense into a more immersive shooting experience. This is just the latest in a series of hardware and software patents from Sony, offering a glimpse into the innovative research and development at this gaming giant.

While many gamers are eagerly anticipating new PlayStation game releases or the PlayStation 5 Pro, others are closely following Sony's behind-the-scenes projects. This unique controller accessory highlights the company's ongoing commitment to hardware innovation.

Filed in June 2024 and published January 2, 2025, the patent describes a gun attachment that adds a "trigger" mechanism to the DualSense. Building on the controller's existing haptic feedback, this attachment aims to heighten realism. Attaching to the bottom of the DualSense, it allows sideways grip, using the space between the R1 and R2 buttons as an aiming sight. This promises significantly enhanced immersion in FPS and action-adventure games, although consumer availability remains unconfirmed.

Figures 12 and 13 depict potential use with a VR headset and other unspecified accessories. As with other intriguing Sony patents, we should expect an official announcement before this accessory hits the market.

The gaming industry's exploration of innovative hardware continues, from next-generation consoles to enhancements for existing peripherals. Keep an eye out for official announcements from Sony regarding this and future patent developments.
