Star Wars: Hunters, Zynga's foray into the Star Wars mobile gaming universe, is closing its doors after less than a year. Launched in June 2024 for iOS and Android, the game, with its unique blend of game show aesthetics and fresh Star Wars character interpretations, will officially shut down on October 1st, 2024. A final content update, including the release of the new hunter Tuya (free-to-play for all), is planned for April 15th. Players can also expect a rerun of certain seasonal events as Season Three is extended, and in-game currency refunds are available.
The announcement came as a surprise, given the lack of prior indications of underperformance. While Zynga's strength as a company suggests deeper reasons for the closure, the game's genre—a pseudo-hero shooter—may have contributed to its struggles. The potential saturation of this genre, coupled with the demographic shift in the Star Wars fanbase towards an older audience less inclined towards high-octane mobile multiplayer experiences, may have played a significant role.
