Best Starter Fighter for Pokémon Fire Red: Choosing Wisely

Author : Scarlett Update:May 12,2025

Embarking on your journey in the Pocket Monsters universe begins with a crucial decision: choosing your first fighter. This choice not only marks the start of your adventure but also influences your strategic approach throughout the game. In Pokémon FireRed, you're presented with three distinct starters, each boasting unique qualities and advantages. Let's delve into the attributes of Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Charmander to identify which one might offer the best start for your journey.

Squirtle

Squirtle, the Water-type turtle Pokémon, is known for its durable shell that serves multiple purposes. Beyond protection and rest, the shell enhances its swimming capabilities due to its hydrodynamic design. Squirtle can also unleash powerful water jets from its mouth, showcasing its versatility both in water and on land. Its calm demeanor makes it slightly more challenging to train than Bulbasaur but easier than Charmander.

For beginners, Squirtle is an excellent choice due to its robust defense and well-rounded stats. Early in the game, it holds a significant advantage against Brock's Rock-type Pokémon and Misty's Water-type team. Its final evolution, Blastoise, boasts potent Water attacks and high survivability, making it an invaluable asset for both battling and navigating the game world with Surf. Squirtle's Torrent ability enhances its Water moves, while its hidden ability, Rain Dish, restores health during rain, adding to its strategic value. However, it faces challenges against Grass and Electric types, particularly against Erika and Lt. Surge, and its attacks and speed may not match those of Charmander.

Bulbasaur

Bulbasaur, a Grass and Poison type, is characterized by its energy-storing bulb, which sustains it during dry spells. The bulb grows by absorbing sunlight, eventually leading to its evolution into Ivysaur. This Pokémon is an ideal choice for new players, offering balanced stats and versatility. Its types provide an edge against the first two Gym Leaders, Brock and Misty.

Bulbasaur's Leech Seed ability allows it to drain opponents' HP gradually, while Vine Whip uses its vines as effective limbs for combat and manipulation. Its hidden ability, Chlorophyll, doubles its speed in sunlight, offering a tactical advantage. Yet, it is vulnerable to Fire, Ice, Psychic, and Flying attacks, making it less effective against Charmander and challenging in certain battles. Its evolution maintains these weaknesses, and its attack power may not compare to that of Charizard or Blastoise.

Charmander

Charmander, the Fire-type lizard Pokémon, is renowned for the flame on its tail, which reflects its vitality and emotions. A healthy Charmander's flame remains strong even in rain. While popular, it presents challenges at the game's outset. Its high Attack and Speed, along with effective Fire moves against Grass, Ice, Bug, and Steel types, make it a formidable fighter. Charmander evolves into Charizard, unlocking powerful moves and the potential for Mega Evolution.

However, early on, Charmander struggles against Brock's Rock-type and Misty's Water-type Pokémon due to type disadvantages and its relatively low defense. Despite these initial hurdles, Charmander becomes a powerful ally later in the game, rewarding trainers willing to face early challenges with one of the strongest fighters in the game.

Choosing Your First Pokémon: Who to Take on Your Journey?

Each starter Pokémon offers distinct advantages and challenges, aligning with different play styles. For an easy start, Bulbasaur is the top choice, excelling against the first two gyms and maintaining utility throughout the game. Charmander suits those who relish a challenge, while Squirtle appeals to players seeking balance and versatility.

In our analysis, Bulbasaur emerges as the most favorable option for a smooth progression. Its Grass type effectively counters the initial gyms, and its solid Defense and Stamina make it a reliable choice for beginners and seasoned players alike. While Charmander's early struggles are notable, its potential for growth is unmatched. Squirtle's versatility and strong final form make it a solid middle ground. Ultimately, your choice should reflect your preferred play style and strategy for navigating the challenges ahead in the Pocket Monsters world.
