In 2024, after exploring the best Switch party games, the exceptional release of Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club inspired me to compile a list of the best visual novels and adventure games currently available on the Switch. This includes both pure visual novels and adventure games with visual novel elements, representing a diverse range of regions and release years. The list is presented in no particular order.
Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club ($49.99) + Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection
Nintendo's 2021 remakes of the Famicom Detective Club games were a revelation, though the lack of a physical release was a minor drawback. The 2024 release of Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, both physically and digitally, is a stunning new entry. It feels like a genuine sequel, though this might not appeal to all players. The production values are exceptional, and the shockingly good ending fully justifies its M rating. Unexpectedly, it’s a top contender for my Game of the Year. Download the demo to experience it firsthand. For those wanting to play the originals first, the Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection offers a classic adventure game experience with old-school design and gameplay.
VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action ($14.99)
A frequent favorite on my "best of" lists, VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action shines with its compelling story, memorable music, striking aesthetic, and especially, its captivating characters. Having played it multiple times across various platforms, it feels perfectly at home on the Switch. I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone, regardless of their preference for point-and-click adventures. Mix drinks, change lives—it's that simple.
The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition ($39.99)
The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition is the definitive version of a personal favorite, encompassing the original game and substantial additions. A pure visual novel, it's a storytelling masterpiece that thrives on the Switch. This gothic horror experience will stay with you long after you finish it, enhanced by its breathtaking soundtrack.
Coffee Talk Episode 1+2 ($12.99 + $14.99)
While sold separately on the eShop and in physical imports, a North American Switch bundle justifies including both Coffee Talk games as one entry. Though not reaching the heights of VA-11 Hall-A, Coffee Talk perfectly captures the essence of a coffee shop setting, providing a relaxing experience with a charming story, excellent pixel art, and a delightful soundtrack. If you enjoy coffee and engaging conversations, this is for you.
Type-Moon's Visual Novels: Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and Mahoyo (Variable)
This entry encompasses three titles: Tsukihime, Fate/stay night Remastered, and Witch on the Holy Night (Mahoyo). All are lengthy but rewarding visual novels. For newcomers to the genre, Fate/stay night is a good starting point, but Tsukihime's remake is highly recommended. Witch on the Holy Night follows these two in terms of quality.
PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo ($19.99)
Square Enix's PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo is a surprising gem, exceeding all expectations with its captivating narrative, engaging delivery, and unexpected gameplay mechanics. It features memorable characters, stunning art, and a compelling mystery that makes it a worthwhile experience.
Gnosia ($24.99)
Described as a sci-fi social deduction RPG, Gnosia blends adventure and visual novel elements. The goal is to identify the Gnosia among a group, using gathered information and voting to eliminate them. Character progression and some RNG elements aside, Gnosia is a fantastic experience that warrants its purchase across multiple platforms.
Steins;Gate Series (Variable)
Spike Chunsoft's Steins;Gate series on Switch, particularly Steins;Gate Elite, is essential for introducing newcomers to visual novels. While I hope for the original Steins;Gate release, Steins;Gate Elite is an excellent starting point for anime fans. Playing other Steins;Gate games is recommended after experiencing the original story.
AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES and nirvanA Initiative (Variable)
Spike Chunsoft's AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES and nirvanA Initiative, a collaboration between Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi and No More Heroes character designer Yusuke Kozaki, are exceptional adventure games. Despite their seemingly modest budget, they deliver outstanding stories, music, and characters. These are must-plays, and a worthy alternative to the absence of Zero Escape on Switch.
NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD ($19.99)
An adventure game with multiple endings, NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD balances disturbing horror and heartwarming moments, following the daily life of an aspiring streamer. Its unforgettable experience led me to import the limited edition Switch release.
Ace Attorney Series (Variable)
Capcom has brought the entire Ace Attorney series to Switch, including the original trilogies and spin-offs. While the original trilogy may feel dated, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles serves as an excellent entry point. The entire series' availability on one handheld is a significant achievement.
Spirit Hunter: Death Mark, NG, and Death Mark II (Variable)
The Spirit Hunter trilogy, a blend of horror adventure and visual novel elements, boasts a striking art style and excellent localization. Though some content is grotesque, the compelling stories and unique presentation make it a memorable experience.
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim ($59.99)
While not a pure adventure game, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim incorporates real-time strategy battles within its compelling narrative. A decade-defining game, it's a must-play experience, enhanced by its presentation on the Switch's OLED screen.
This list exceeds a typical "top 10," intentionally including games and series I highly recommend. The exclusion of certain titles was to avoid arbitrary limitations. This is my selection of the best visual novels and adventure games on Switch in 2024. Suggestions for additions are welcome! Thanks for reading!
Note: A separate list of otome games is in progress.
