Discover the latest on the potential release of Wind Waker HD for the Switch 2, alongside insights into Nintendo's plans and the enhancements made to the original game.
Wind Waker GameCube Version Coming To Switch 2
Nintendo has exciting news for fans: the classic GameCube version of Wind Waker is set to make its way to the Switch 2. This announcement was made during the Nintendo Direct for Switch 2 on April 2, sparking curiosity about the future of Wind Waker HD on the new console.
Nintendo of America's Senior Vice President of Product Development, Nate Bihldorff, addressed these concerns. In a conversation with Tim Gettys of Kinda Funny Games Daily on April 9, following a Switch 2 press event in New York, Bihldorff made it clear that the release of the GameCube version does not rule out a potential port of Wind Waker HD. Gettys shared, "I did ask if having The Wind Waker on NSO precludes it from the Switch 2 getting the actual Wii U port at some point, and he was very quick to say 'no, all options are on the table'. Obviously, nothing is confirmed one way or another."
First Released in 2002
Originally launched on the GameCube in 2002 in Japan and 2003 in the West, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker received a significant upgrade with the release of Wind Waker HD on the Wii U in 2013. This HD version boasts numerous improvements, including a resolution upgrade from 480p to HD, enhanced lighting, gyro controls for weapons, faster sailing, and other gameplay enhancements. With the GameCube library being exclusive to the Switch 2, porting Wind Waker HD could be the key for original Switch owners to experience this beloved title.
Nintendo has also announced updates to its online service, rebranding the Nintendo Switch Online classics game libraries to Nintendo Classics. Members of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack will soon enjoy playing The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-ZERO GX, and SOULCALIBUR II on the Nintendo Switch 2, with more titles slated for future release. Additionally, these games will feature options like retro screen filters and widescreen gameplay, enhancing the nostalgic experience for players.
