The Minecraft Movie Team Had a Private Server They Played On and Jack Black Even Built His Own Mansion

The recently released A Minecraft Movie took an innovative approach to authenticity by setting up a private Minecraft server for its cast and crew. This unique move allowed everyone involved to immerse themselves in the game's world, fostering a creative environment reminiscent of an indie game studio. Producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson shared with IGN that this setup encouraged a flurry of ideas, though not all could be implemented due to the film's ongoing production. However, it did allow the team to add special touches that enhanced the film's authenticity to the beloved game.

Director Jared Hess highlighted Jack Black's dedication to the role of Steve, noting his "super-weirdly method" approach to Minecraft. Black was seen harvesting resources and building in-game, bringing fresh ideas to the set. "It was so much fun," Hess remarked, appreciating how Black and the team contributed in their unique ways.

Jack Black himself embraced the game fully, stating, "I had an Xbox in my trailer and I did play because an actor prepares." He aimed to prove his Minecraft prowess by constructing a massive mansion atop the highest mountain in the server world, complete with a stairway to Steve and a basement art gallery. "I wanted everyone to know that I was a real Minecrafter," Black said, though he wasn't sure if his creation still stood.

Producer Ólafsson confirmed that Black's mansion was indeed still up and had been maintained for a year. He even encountered security guards from the set still using the server, showcasing the lasting impact of this creative tool on the film's production.
