Euchre uses a 24-card deck, with two teams of two players.

When a team "orders up trump," they declare their intention to win most of the tricks. Three or four tricks earn one point; all five tricks earn two. Failing to win three tricks ("being euchred") costs the team two points, awarded to the opponents.

A player with strong cards can "go alone," playing without a partner. Winning all five tricks alone scores four points; three or four tricks scores one. Being euchred while alone still only costs the team two points.

The key rule: You're never forced to play trump (unless it's the led suit), but you must follow suit if possible.
