Avowed: Exploring All Backgrounds and Their Roles

Author : Alexander Update:Apr 28,2025

In *Avowed*, the character creator offers a rich experience, allowing players not only to customize their character's appearance but also to choose a Background that enriches the narrative and gameplay. Each Background in *Avowed* comes with a unique backstory, special dialogue options, and a starting weapon, though all are capable of using any equipment and abilities. Here's a detailed look at the five Backgrounds available in the game:

In *Avowed*, you can select from five distinct Backgrounds, each providing a unique narrative and gameplay experience:

Arcane Scholar: This Background casts you as a graduate of Bragganhyl Academy, renowned for your treatise on soul lineages that stirred controversy with a local lord, leading to your arrest. However, the emperor saw value in your knowledge and recruited you to work in the imperial court archives. Characters with this Background are well-versed in the occult, legal precedents, historical observations, and even poetry, making them ideal for players interested in a scholarly and intellectual approach to the game.

Court Augur: With a tragic backstory, Court Augurs were once shunned by their community after crop failures and their mysterious insights led to suspicion and fear. Fleeing to Highcrown, they were elevated to the emperor's personal mystic. This Background is perfect for those wishing to delve into the mystical and spiritual elements of *Avowed*, with dialogue options that reflect a deep connection to magic and the gods. Players choosing this path will find a natural affinity with the companion Giatta.

Noble Scion: Born into wealth and influence but tarnished by scandal and family disputes, Noble Scions sought refuge and mercy from the emperor. This Background is ideal for players who wish to remain loyal to the empire, acting as its agent in the Living Lands. It's a great fit for those interested in navigating the political landscape and maintaining allegiance to the imperial throne.

Vanguard Scout: Spared from execution, Vanguard Scouts have lived a humble life, preferring the wilderness over the complexities of city life and politics. Their skills in tracking and espionage make them invaluable to the empire. This Background suits players who enjoy a hunter's playstyle and will find a strong connection with the companion Marius.

War Hero: Having quelled a violent Skaenite uprising, War Heroes were rewarded with a place among the empire's elite warriors. This Background appeals to players who want to embody the warrior archetype, with a natural affinity for the companion Kai. Their loyalty and grit are highly valued by the emperor.

Every Background’s Starting Weapon in Avowed

Each Background in *Avowed* comes equipped with a starting weapon, though these are of Common Quality and primarily one-handed melee items. As you progress through the game, you'll need to upgrade or replace these initial weapons. The choice of Background should therefore be based on the narrative and roleplay elements you wish to explore, rather than the starting weapon itself, as all weapons can be found early in the game. Here are the starting weapons for each Background:

  • Arcane Scholar – Common Dagger (One-Handed)
  • Court Augur – Common Mace (One-Handed)
  • Noble Scion – Common Sword (One-Handed)
  • Vanguard Scout – Common Axe (One-Handed)
  • War Hero – Common Spear (One-Handed)

These starting weapons can be found leaning against crates near the shipwreck during the On Strange Shores Quest.

That covers all the backgrounds in *Avowed* and their unique contributions to your journey. *Avowed* is now available on PC and Xbox, offering players a deep and immersive experience in the Living Lands.
