Deltarune Update: Chapter 4 Nears Completion, but Release Remains Distant
Toby Fox, creator of Undertale, recently shared a development update on Deltarune in his newsletter. While Chapter 4 is nearing completion, a release date for Chapters 3 and 4 (slated for simultaneous release on PC, Switch, and PS4) is still some time away.
Chapter 4 Progress:
The majority of Chapter 4 is finished. All maps are complete, battles are playable, and Fox reports positive feedback from test players. However, some polishing remains, including minor cutscene improvements, battle balancing, visual enhancements, background additions, and refinements to ending sequences. Fox considers the chapter "basically playable" despite needing further polish.
Challenges and Next Steps:
The multi-platform and multilingual release presents significant challenges, especially considering this is the first major paid release since Undertale. Fox highlights several crucial tasks before launch:
- Testing new features
- Finalizing PC and console versions
- Japanese localization
- Comprehensive bug testing
Chapter 3 and Beyond:
Chapter 3 development is complete (as per Fox's February newsletter). Interestingly, early work on Chapter 5 has already begun, with map creation and battle design underway.
The newsletter teased some upcoming content, including Ralsei and Rouxls dialogue, an Elnina character description, and a new item, GingerGuard. While the delay is disappointing for fans, Fox assures them that Chapters 3 and 4 combined will be longer than Chapters 1 and 2, and that future chapter releases should be more streamlined once this release is complete.
