Today's Xbox Partner Showcase kicked off with a surprising new game reveal: Armatus, apparently developed by the team behind Godfall.
Armatus is a third-person roguelite shooter set in a dystopian version of Paris—once vibrant, now shattered. A cataclysm known as The Vanishing has brought about the end of the world, and you play as a masked warrior battling demonic forces across the ruins. For now, that’s the extent of the story: the trailer showcased intense combat and striking, original creature designs.
An Xbox Wire post added a bit more context: after the world’s collapse, four members of the Armatus gather and summon you to fight in their name, seeking redemption and passage to heaven. Your quest leads you to The Sunless Gate along The Scoured Path—a perpetually shifting route through the fractured streets of Paris, featuring procedurally generated rooms, enemy sets, and loot.
If Godfall, Counterplay’s previous title, has slipped your mind, here’s a quick refresher: released in 2020, Godfall was an action RPG initially exclusive to PlayStation and PC, later launching on Xbox. Marketed as a “looter-slasher,” it emphasized acquiring increasingly powerful gear, boasting a wide array of visually stunning weapons. However, it drew mixed reviews—including from us—with IGN giving it a 6/10. Our reviewer noted at the time: “Godfall can be an enjoyable and lovely gear-based action game while it lasts, but the repetition of its missions wears thin before the end of its campaign, and even thinner in the endgame afterward.” Here’s hoping Armatus delivers a more satisfying experience.
Armatus launches in 2026 for Xbox Series consoles, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. You can revisit all the announcements from today’s Partner Showcase right here.
