Larian Studios Shifts Focus to New Game, Enforces Media Blackout

Author : Lily Update:Apr 27,2025

Larian Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3, has announced a shift in focus to their next major project, promising a "media blackout" moving forward. While fans eagerly await Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, expected to launch this year, Larian's full attention is now devoted to crafting their next title.

Reflecting on the journey with Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian boss Swen Vincke shared his thoughts on social media, expressing nostalgia and excitement for what's to come. "But the story ain't over yet," Vincke tweeted, hinting at more to come from the studio. In a follow-up statement to VideoGamer, Larian confirmed their complete focus on the new game, emphasizing the shift to a media blackout.

Got me all nostalgic - it really has been an incredible journey so far. But the story ain't over yet. Stay tuned. Going to try to skip the dark night of the soul moment though if you don't mind.

While details about Larian's next game are scarce, it's clear that it won't be a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3 or another Dungeons & Dragons title. Instead, Larian is venturing into new territory with a brand new game, a decision made after the studio struggled to generate internal enthusiasm for a Baldur's Gate follow-up.

Back in November 2023, Vincke hinted at the studio's next project, expressing excitement and a desire to push boundaries. "I wish I could tell you about our next big game but this is really encouraging us to ensure it pushes many boundaries," he teased, in response to Baldur’s Gate 3's numerous nominations at The Game Awards.

Additionally, in July 2023, ahead of Baldur’s Gate 3's launch, Vincke mentioned the possibility of a sequel to the Divinity: Original Sin series. "It's our own universe we built, so we're definitely gonna get back there at some point," he said, acknowledging the need for a creative break after completing Baldur’s Gate 3.

With Divinity not being the immediate next step, speculation abounds about Larian's new direction. Could it be a foray into science fiction, a modern-day setting, or even a new genre entirely? Given Larian's history with fantasy RPGs, the possibilities are intriguing.

It may be years before we get concrete details on Larian's next venture, but one thing is certain: the studio is dedicated to delivering something fresh and innovative.
