Mastering Parry Techniques in Avowed

Author : Olivia Update:May 20,2025

There's nothing quite as thrilling in action games as the moment you expertly parry an enemy's attack, turning their aggression into your advantage with a swift counterstrike. If you're eager to experience this in *Avowed*, here's your comprehensive guide to mastering the art of parrying in the game.

How to Unlock Parry in Avowed

You'll find the Parry ability in the middle column at the top. To unlock it, you must first allocate an Ability point into any of the three core trees. Once that's done, you can unlock Parry.

Parry comes in three ranks, detailed below for your convenience:

RankPlayer Level RequirementLevel Description
1N/A (1 Point Spent)Unlocks Parry.
2Player Level 5Increases Parry efficiency by 25%, dealing greater Stun when Parrying enemies.
3Player Level 8Increases Parry efficiency by 50%, dealing greater Stun when parrying enemies.

At level 10, you'll also unlock "Arrow Deflection," a separate ability that allows you to block arrows and other projectiles by parrying.

How to Parry Attacks in Avowed

You'll hear a distinctive metal clanking sound and see a visual cue as your enemy staggers from the impact of your parry. Mastering the timing can be challenging, as it differs slightly between enemies, but with practice, you'll get the hang of it. It's less demanding than in games like *Dark Souls* or *Elden Ring*.

Parrying Isn’t Always an Option

Keep in mind that not all attacks in *Avowed* can be parried. Look out for a red circle indicating unparriable attacks, which you must dodge. Additionally, not all weapons support parrying. Single-handed and two-handed weapons can typically parry, but only if they're not in your off-hand. Shields in the off-hand also allow for parrying. Unfortunately, ranged weapons such as guns, wands, and bows, as well as grimoires, cannot parry.

What Parrying Does (& Why You Might Want to Do It)

Parrying in *Avowed* is a powerful tool that stuns your attacker, causing them to stagger and leaving them vulnerable to your follow-up attacks. This can significantly increase your damage output while minimizing the damage you take. It's particularly beneficial for melee-focused characters who thrive in close combat. However, if your build leans towards ranged attacks, you might not find parry as useful. The good news is that respeccing in *Avowed* is both easy and affordable, so if you decide parrying isn't for you, you can adjust your abilities without hassle.

And that's your complete guide on how to parry in *Avowed*. Now, go out there and turn those enemy attacks into your advantage!
