Remedy Entertainment has unveiled Control: Resonant, the successor to IGN's 2019 Game of the Year, Control, at The Game Awards 2025. Scheduled for release in 2026 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, this game is shaping up to be far from a conventional follow-up.
To begin with, players will not step into the shoes of Jesse Faden this time. The story jumps forward seven years, placing you in control of her younger brother, Dylan. Taken by the Federal Bureau of Control at age ten, Dylan fell into a coma after an encounter with The Hiss. Speaking of which, The Hiss has now breached the confines of The Oldest House—the setting of the first game—spilling into the streets of Manhattan and transforming it into a surreal landscape. As seen in the trailer, the city is overrun and physically warped by paranatural forces.
However, the shift in protagonist and location isn't the only major change for Control: Resonant. The combat system has also been reimagined. Instead of Jesse's iconic Service Weapon, Dylan employs a raw, shape-shifting melee weapon known as the Aberrant, enhanced by his own supernatural powers. At first impression, this combination brings to mind the lightsaber and Force dynamics of Respawn's Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor. When asked about the combat feel, Creative Director Mikael Kasurinen shared: “Our combat retains the unique Control DNA—it's aggressive, fast-paced, and proactive. Mastery comes from blending weapon strikes with supernatural abilities to hunt down foes. Dylan is agile and light-footed; movement is central to our combat rhythm.
“Preparation is equally vital, crafting a build that suits your playstyle. A significant part of the experience involves tactical decisions: how to fluidly merge transforming melee assaults with supernatural powers while on the move.
“Character development has depth, with multiple progression systems allowing you to grow more adaptable and powerful.”
So yes, players can expect deep build customization. The game will also feature side quests and introduce new factions to engage with. Enemies will wield their own paranormal attacks and can navigate the twisted environments as swiftly as you can.
Remedy confirms that playing the original Control is not a prerequisite for understanding this story, noting that the two games are more like siblings than direct sequels.
"This is not a safe sequel," Kasurinen emphasizes.
