Exciting news for fans of the iconic franchise: Power Rangers is gearing up for a live-action series on Disney+. According to The Wrap, the showrunners behind the successful Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, are in discussions to helm this new project. They are set to write, showrun, and produce the series in collaboration with Disney+ and 20th Century TV.
Hasbro, the current owner of Power Rangers, aims to revitalize the franchise for a new generation while ensuring it remains appealing to long-time fans. This move comes as part of Hasbro's broader strategy to leverage the "tremendous upside potential" of the Power Rangers brand, which they acquired from Saban Properties in 2018 for $522 million.
The '90s TV show, The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, became a cultural phenomenon, captivating a generation of kids with its teenage superheroes and their impressive mechs, which could combine to form an even larger mech.
Brian Goldner, Hasbro's chairman and CEO at the time of the acquisition, expressed enthusiasm about the brand's potential across various platforms, including toys, games, consumer products, digital gaming, and entertainment, with a global reach.
This announcement follows the less successful 2017 movie reboot, which attempted a darker, grittier take on the Power Rangers universe but failed to resonate with audiences, leading to the cancellation of planned sequels and the subsequent sale of the franchise to Hasbro.
In addition to the Power Rangers series, Hasbro is also developing other high-profile projects, such as a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series titled The Forgotten Realms and an animated Magic: The Gathering series, both in development at Netflix, along with plans for a Magic: The Gathering cinematic universe.
