Rogue Loops: A Hades-Inspired Roguelike with a Twist
The upcoming indie roguelike, Rogue Loops, is generating buzz with its striking resemblance to Hades, particularly in its art style and core gameplay loop. However, Rogue Loops introduces a unique mechanic that sets it apart from the pack. While a release date hasn't been officially announced (currently slated for Q1 2025), a free demo is available on Steam, offering players a sneak peek.
The game features a recurring dungeon with randomly generated loot and ability upgrades, viewed from a top-down perspective. This echoes the structure of popular roguelikes like Hades. But Rogue Loops adds a compelling twist: ability upgrades are paired with distinct downsides. These drawbacks, similar in concept to Hades' Chaos Gates, can significantly alter gameplay. Unlike Hades' temporary effects, however, these "curses" in Rogue Loops may persist throughout the entire playthrough, adding a layer of strategic depth.
The narrative centers around a family trapped in a deadly time loop. Players navigate five floors of increasingly challenging dungeons, battling unique enemies and bosses. Each run unlocks procedurally generated upgrades, enabling diverse character builds through a combination of buffs and debuffs.
While a precise release date remains elusive, the Steam page indicates a launch in the first quarter of 2025. In the meantime, the free demo allows players to explore the first floor and whet their appetite for more. With its blend of familiar roguelike elements and innovative mechanics, Rogue Loops promises a compelling experience for fans of the genre. Until its release, other excellent roguelikes such as Dead Cells and Hades 2 offer satisfying alternatives.
