SmashTogether, a fan-made dating platform for Super Smash Bros. enthusiasts, has reportedly been hit with a legal shutdown just days before its open beta was set to begin.
A Crushing Legal Blow
After months of development, the app was scheduled to launch its public testing phase on May 15. However, a May 13 social media post featuring a dejected Yoshi meme signaled trouble, simply stating: "We got cease and desisted."

While the developers haven't named the sender, Nintendo appears the likely source given the app's direct connection to their fighting game franchise.
What Could Have Been
The platform promised to be "the ultimate matchmaking service for Smash Bros. fans," offering specialized algorithms to help players find both romantic partners and competitive teammates. Profile options included listing your main fighter, tournament accomplishments, and Smash-themed prompts like searching for someone who "can make it out of pools at a major."
The combination of intellectual property concerns and the unconventional pairing of a dating service with a family-friendly game likely triggered the legal action. It remains unclear whether the SmashTogether team will attempt to pivot to a non-branded version of their concept.
