Exciting news for fans of Sam Fisher: Ubisoft has not forgotten about the beloved Splinter Cell series. In a recent move, the company has added Steam Achievements to the 2013 title, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, marking a significant update to the 12-year-old game. This update came quietly overnight, with Ubisoft announcing, "Agents, we are pleased to announce that Steam Achievements are now available for Splinter Cell: Blacklist!"
Players who have already completed achievements in the game will be pleased to know that these will be "retroactively earned for the accomplishments already completed in your game." To unlock these achievements on Steam, you'll need to boot up the game at least once, after which "the previously unlocked Ubisoft Connect achievements will be automatically unlocked on Steam," as stated by the development team. Notably, Ubisoft decided not to include the additional 19 online achievements available on consoles, ensuring that players can still achieve 100% completion on Steam.
While fans eagerly await more news on the Splinter Cell Remake, the last significant update came in 2022 when IGN met with Ubisoft Toronto developers to discuss their design philosophy behind the game. The upcoming remake, which will utilize the advanced Snowdrop engine, aims to bring the classic first game in the franchise back to life. Creative director Chris Auty shared his vision for the remake, stating, "20 years later, we can look back at the plot, the characters, the overall story of the game [and] make some improvements — things that might not have aged particularly well. But the core of the story, the core of the experience will remain as it was in the original game."
In other Ubisoft news, the company recently established a new subsidiary focused on its Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six brands, backed by a €1.16 billion (approx. $1.25 billion) investment from Tencent. This comes on the heels of Assassin's Creed Shadows surpassing 3 million players, a critical success for Ubisoft following a challenging period marked by high-profile flops, layoffs, studio closures, and game cancellations. The success of Shadows is crucial for Ubisoft, especially after its share price reached an historic low.
