Khmer Traditional Board Game: Ouk Chaktrang

The first type of Khmer chess game, known to Cambodians as Ouk Chaktrang (អុកចត្រង្គ), holds a special place in Cambodian culture. The name "Ouk" is believed to originate from the sound produced when a chess piece is moved across the board during a check. In the context of the game, "Ouk" signifies a check, which the player must announce loudly when challenging the opponent's King.

The term "Chaktrang" is more formal and traces its roots back to the Indian Sanskrit word Chaturanga (चतुरङ्ग), reflecting the game's historical connections. Similar to international chess, Ouk Chaktrang is played between two individuals, yet it often transforms into a team sport in Cambodia. This unique aspect adds excitement and entertainment, as groups of Cambodian men frequently gather at local barbershops or men's cafes to engage in spirited matches.

The primary goal of Ouk Chaktrang is to checkmate the opponent's King. The decision on who moves first is typically reached by mutual agreement. In subsequent games, the player who lost the previous match usually gains the advantage of the first move. In the event of a draw, players again decide through mutual agreement who will start the next game.
