Guerrilla Games' Horizon Multiplayer: Ambitious Player Count or Preemptive Measures?
Guerrilla Games' upcoming Horizon multiplayer game is generating considerable speculation, fueled by a recent job listing. The listing suggests the studio is developing live-service systems capable of handling over one million concurrent players. This raises two possibilities: exceptionally high player expectations or proactive measures to prevent a launch-day server meltdown.
Since Horizon Forbidden West's release in 2022 and its Burning Shores DLC, Guerrilla has remained relatively quiet, focusing on smaller collaborations. However, evidence strongly suggests a Horizon multiplayer title has been in development for years, with job postings dating back to 2018 hinting at its existence.
A recent job posting for a Senior Platform Engineer explicitly mentions "proven experience building and operating multi-service, 1M+ user globally distributed systems." This requirement strongly implies a planned infrastructure capable of supporting a massive player base.
Alternatively, this robust infrastructure could be a precautionary measure. The disastrous server issues experienced by Helldivers 2 upon its release serve as a cautionary tale. To avoid a similar scenario, Guerrilla might be over-preparing to ensure a smooth launch for its Horizon multiplayer game, irrespective of its actual player count.
The Horizon multiplayer game's prolonged development suggests a potential reveal in 2025. A previous Guerrilla job listing hinted at a new Horizon release this year, and given the anticipated time until the next mainline entry, this could very well be the multiplayer project. The studio's actions suggest a significant project on the horizon, whether driven by ambitious player projections or a desire for a flawless launch.
