Ubisoft Restarts Project Maverick Development: Rumors

Author : Eleanor Update:Apr 16,2025

The extraction shooter set in the Far Cry universe, taking place in the frigid landscapes of Alaska, has undergone a significant transformation, according to a report by Insider Gaming. Originally known as Project Maverick, this game was initially envisioned as a multiplayer expansion for Far Cry 7. However, after an internal review, the development trajectory shifted dramatically. Despite garnering positive feedback from employees and testers, Ubisoft's management decided to reallocate the majority of the resources to Project Blackbird, which is Far Cry 7. The final blow to the multiplayer component came with the reassignment of the technical team to other projects.

The responsibility for the project has now shifted to Ubisoft Sherbrooke, a studio renowned for its expertise in development support. Almost the entire original development team has been redirected to focus on the next installment of the Far Cry series.

As per insider Tom Henderson's report from mid-December 2024, Far Cry 7 is set to plunge players into an atmosphere brimming with tension and desperation, where time becomes the ultimate adversary. The game's narrative centers on the protagonist's quest to rescue their family, who have been abducted by a sinister conspiracy cult. This cult is conducting terrifying experiments using hallucinogens on both animals and children. Players are tasked with saving their loved ones within a stringent 72-hour in-game deadline, which translates to 24 real-time hours. This time constraint introduces a pivotal gameplay element, injecting a heightened sense of urgency into every moment.

A distinctive feature of Far Cry 7 is the integration of a timer into the protagonist's wristwatch, serving as a constant reminder of the ticking clock. This element not only amplifies the urgency but also adds pressure, compelling players to make swift and strategic decisions. Far Cry 7 aims to deliver a gripping experience where every second is precious, and every decision can lead to significant outcomes.
