Players & Cards

Tong-Its is a three-player game that uses one standard 52-card deck (no jokers). Cards in each suit rank from Ace (low) to King: Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King. Aces are worth 1 point; Jacks, Queens, and Kings are worth 10 points; all other cards equal their face value.

Objective

The goal is to form sets and runs by drawing and discarding cards, and to reduce the total value of unmatched cards in your hand.

A run is three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, such as ♥4, ♥5, ♥6 or ♠8, ♠9, ♠10, ♠J. (A-K-Q is not a valid run because Aces are low in this game.)

A set consists of three or four cards of the same rank, such as ♥7, ♣7, ♦7. Each card can only belong to one combination at a time—it cannot be used in both a set and a run simultaneously.

The Deal

The first dealer is chosen at random. After that, the previous hand's winner becomes the dealer. Cards are dealt counterclockwise, one at a time: the dealer receives 13 cards and the others get 12 each. The remaining cards form the stock pile, placed face down.

The Play

Each turn includes the following steps:

Draw Begin your turn by drawing one card from either the stock or the discard pile. You may only take from the discard pile if you can immediately form a meld (set or run) with it, and you must then reveal that meld.

Exposing Melds If you hold valid melds (sets or runs), you may expose them face up on the table. Meld exposure is optional when drawing from the stock. You don't have to expose a meld just because you can. A hand is considered opened only when at least one meld is placed on the table. If you have a set of four cards and did not draw from the discard to complete it, you may place it face down. This lets you open your hand without revealing the secret set or losing the associated bonus.

Laying off (sapaw) You may optionally add cards to melds previously exposed by you or others. There’s no limit to the number of cards laid off per turn. Even if your hand isn't open, you can still lay off cards. Doing so on another player's meld prevents them from calling Draw on their next turn.

Discard End your turn by discarding one card from your hand onto the discard pile, face up.
