Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messages, But Other Asynchronous Features Enhanced
FromSoftware has confirmed a significant departure from the traditional Soulsborne formula for its upcoming title, Elden Ring Nightreign. Unlike its predecessor, Nightreign will not feature an in-game messaging system. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki (in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan), is a practical one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-centric design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions of around 40 minutes, leaves insufficient time for players to engage with the messaging system.
The asynchronous messaging system, a hallmark of FromSoftware games, has fostered a vibrant community and contributed significantly to the Soulsborne experience. However, Ishizaki explained that this feature is incompatible with Nightreign's intended shorter, more intense gameplay loops.
Maintaining Asynchronous Elements
Despite the removal of the messaging system, FromSoftware intends to enhance other asynchronous features. The bloodstain mechanic, a staple of the series, will return, offering players even more information about past player deaths and the opportunity to loot fallen foes.
A "Compressed" RPG Experience
The absence of in-game messages aligns with FromSoftware's vision for Nightreign as a "compressed RPG." The developers aim for a consistently intense and multiplayer-focused experience, achieved partly through the game's three-day structure and the elimination of downtime. This focus on streamlined gameplay is central to the game's design philosophy.
Nightreign's release is targeted for 2025, as revealed during The Game Awards 2024. A more specific release window is yet to be announced by FromSoftware and Bandai Namco.
