Insomniac Games Explores More Game-to-Screen Adaptations Amidst Leadership Changes

Insomniac Games, renowned for their iconic titles like Ratchet and Clank, are actively considering more game-to-screen adaptations. This insight comes directly from co-Studio Head Ryan Schneider, who expressed enthusiasm during an interview with Variety. The conversation took place shortly after the announcement of the retirement of Insomniac's founder and long-time CEO, Ted Price.

"I think back to the Ratchet and Clank film from several years ago. And we kind of got an early start on that. So, of course, we’re interested in that kind of thing. We love Ratchet and Clank in particular," Schneider remarked. The 2016 Ratchet and Clank movie, while receiving mixed reviews, sparked interest in further exploring this avenue. With Insomniac's acquisition by Sony in 2019, the studio is poised to leverage Sony's successful track record in game adaptations, exemplified by the critically acclaimed The Last of Us series.

Sony's prowess in transforming video games into compelling movies and TV shows is well-documented. Recent successes include the 2022 Uncharted film and the 2023 The Last of Us TV series. At the CES 2025 press conference, Sony unveiled an exciting lineup of upcoming projects. The Last of Us Season 2 is slated to premiere on HBO in April 2025, while a live-action adaptation of Until Dawn is also set for the same month. Additionally, fans can look forward to the Ghost of Tsushima Legends anime series on Crunchyroll in 2027. Sony is also developing feature films for Helldivers and Horizon Zero Dawn, though specific release dates remain under wraps.

In a significant leadership transition, Insomniac's founder and CEO, Ted Price, announced his retirement after an illustrious 30-year career. Price, who spearheaded the creation of beloved franchises such as Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Marvel’s Spider-Man, shared, "I actually made this decision last year. For me, after over 30 years of leading Insomniac, I felt it was simply time to step aside and let others pave the way for our team."

The reins of the company are now in the capable hands of three Insomniac veterans: Ryan Schneider, Chad Dezern, and Jen Huang, who will serve as co-Studio Heads. Price emphasized the importance of this transition, stating, "I believe strongly that for us to continue our success, we need leaders at the top who are intimately familiar with how we do things, leaders who have helped build our culture and our processes, and who have earned people’s trust."
