Microsoft's recent shift in showcasing multiplatform games during its Xbox showcases marks a significant change in strategy. Previously, games slated for release on platforms other than Xbox were often announced separately or omitted from main showcases, as seen in their June 2024 event. However, the January 2025 showcase notably included PlayStation 5 logos alongside Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Game Pass for titles like Ninja Gaiden 4, Doom: The Dark Ages, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
This contrasts sharply with Sony and Nintendo's approach. Their showcases, such as the recent State of Play, typically focus solely on their respective platforms, even for multiplatform titles. Games like Monster Hunter Wilds and Shinobi: Art of Vengeance were promoted without mention of Xbox or other platforms.
Xbox head Phil Spencer explained this change in strategy to XboxEra, emphasizing transparency and a focus on game accessibility. He stated that the goal is to inform players where they can access Microsoft games, regardless of platform. While acknowledging platform differences, he prioritized showcasing games themselves, aiming for broader reach and player engagement.
Spencer's comments suggest future Xbox showcases will likely continue to feature PS5 and, eventually, Nintendo Switch 2 logos alongside Xbox titles. This could mean future showcases featuring games like Gears of War: E-Day, Fable, Perfect Dark, State of Decay 3, and Call of Duty displaying the PS5 logo alongside the Xbox branding.
However, it's unlikely Sony and Nintendo will reciprocate this approach, maintaining their platform-centric marketing strategies.
