Sega's Risk-Taking Approach Fuels RGG Studio's Ambitious Projects
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (RGG Studio) credits Sega's willingness to embrace risk as the key to their ability to simultaneously develop multiple large-scale projects. This innovative approach is evident in their upcoming slate, which includes a brand new IP and a fresh take on a classic franchise. Learn more about the exciting future of the Like a Dragon studio!
Sega's Bold Investment in New IPs and Concepts
RGG Studio currently juggles several major projects, including a completely original IP. Even with a new Like a Dragon title and a Virtua Fighter remake slated for 2025, they've added two more ambitious projects to their development pipeline. Studio head and director Masayoshi Yokoyama attributes this to Sega's openness to risk.
In a single week in December, RGG unveiled trailers for two distinct projects: Project Century, a new IP set in 1915 Japan (revealed at The Game Awards 2025), and a new Virtua Fighter project (separate from the upcoming Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O remaster), showcased on Sega's official channel. The scale of both projects underscores RGG Studio's ambition, and Sega's confidence in their ability to deliver. This reflects a powerful combination of trust and a commitment to innovation.
"Sega's willingness to accept the possibility of failure, rather than solely focusing on safe bets, is a significant strength," Yokoyama told Famitsu (as translated by Automaton Media). He suggests this risk-taking is ingrained in Sega's DNA, citing the creation of Shenmue as an example. Initially working with the Virtua Fighter IP, Sega sought something more, leading to the innovative concept of a "VF" RPG.
RGG Studio assures fans that the simultaneous development of these projects won't compromise quality, particularly for the Virtua Fighter series. With the original creator, Yu Suzuki, expressing his support, and Virtua Fighter being a cornerstone of Sega's legacy, Yokoyama, Virtua Fighter Project producer Riichiro Yamada, and their team are committed to delivering a high-quality product.
Yamada added, "With this new 'VF,' we aim to create something innovative and exciting for a wide audience. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to the series, we hope you'll eagerly anticipate further updates." Yokoyama echoed this sentiment, expressing his excitement for both upcoming titles.
