Sony has announced the creation of a new PlayStation studio, teamLFG, and provided a tantalizing glimpse into its debut project. In a recent PlayStation Blog post, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment's Studio Business Group, revealed that teamLFG was born out of Bungie, the developers behind Destiny and Marathon. The studio is currently working on an "ambitious" incubation project that Hulst is "very excited about."
The name teamLFG, which stands for 'Looking For Group,' hints at a focus on social gaming. The studio's first game is described as a team-based action game that draws inspiration from a diverse range of genres including fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and "frog-type games." Set in a "lighthearted, comedic world" within a brand-new, mythic, science-fantasy universe, the game aims to foster friendship, community, and belonging among players.
teamLFG emphasized their mission to create games where players can connect and form lasting bonds. "We want our players to feel excited when they log on to discover their teammates already hanging out online. We want our players to recognize familiar names and to make myths and memes out of each other. We want our players to love remembering that one time where they pulled off That Play that changed the whole story of the match. As we say on the team – dat’s da good stuff," the studio stated.
The studio aims to build immersive multiplayer worlds that players can engage with for countless hours, learning, playing, and mastering the game. They plan to involve the community in the development process through early access playtests and intend to stay responsive to player feedback both before and after launch, as they grow the game and its community over the years.

teamLFG's game is an incubation project that emerged from Bungie amid significant layoffs in 2023. Following Sony's acquisition, Bungie reportedly struggled to meet financial targets with Destiny 2, leading to layoffs affecting approximately 100 employees in November 2023. A second round of layoffs in 2024 impacted another 220 staff members, or 17% of the studio's workforce, with an additional 155 employees being integrated into other parts of Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was during this period that the incubation project was spun off and announced.
Late last year, a former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's role in pushing through improvements to Destiny 2, indicating a positive influence from the parent company. Since then, Bungie has fully unveiled the extraction shooter Marathon and outlined the future roadmap for Destiny 2. There are reportedly no plans for Destiny 3, and a Destiny spinoff project called Payback has been canceled.
