Hideo Kojima’s highly anticipated spiritual successor to Metal Gear, titled Physint, is still “another five or six years” away from release.
This update comes directly from Kojima himself, who shared with Le Film Francais that his ambitions to direct a film remain on hold until he completes his first "action espionage" game since his well-documented departure from Konami in 2015.
“I've had so many offers since I left Konami, with serious conditions to develop games in my independent studio,” Kojima explained, as translated by ResetEra user Red Kong XIX. “Besides Death Stranding 2, there's also Physint in development. That will take me another five or six years.”
He continued, “But maybe after that, I could finally decide to take on a film. I grew up with cinema. Directing would be, in a way, a tribute to it. Also, I'm getting older, and I'd prefer to do it while I'm still young!”

Although Physint was officially announced by PlayStation Studios head Herman Hulst back in January 2024, details have been scarce ever since. Interestingly, Kojima initially hinted that the project might also be a movie, but later clarified on X/Twitter that its “look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, sound, etc… are all at the next level of ‘Digital Entertainment’ that could be called a ‘movie.’”

This isn’t the only project currently occupying Kojima and his team. Alongside Physint, they’re also deep into development on Death Stranding 2 and OD, a brand-new IP being created in partnership with Xbox Game Studios. OD features actress Hunter Schafer and acclaimed filmmaker Jordan Peele. Additionally, Kojima is serving as a producer for A24’s upcoming film adaptation of the original Death Stranding.

Speaking of which, Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is set to launch on June 26—and fans got a small tease recently when series star Norman Reedus told IGN that “of course” he’d play himself in the film adaptation.
Meanwhile, fresh off sharing some of his previously shelved game concepts—including a unique idea for a ‘Forgetting Game’ where players lose abilities and memories after long breaks—Kojima also revealed last week that he’s left his team a USB drive filled with unreleased game ideas, just in case anything happens to him. A true visionary to the end.
