Silent Hill f Emphasizes Action-Packed Gameplay Compared to Earlier Entries
Steering Clear of Reproducing Silent Hill 2 While Engaging New Players

Silent Hill f adopts a stronger action focus in its gameplay, designed to appeal to modern audiences and distinguish the title from past Silent Hill releases. In a GameSpark interview on August 1, the development team discussed their vision for this new chapter in the iconic horror series.
Unlike previous entries like Silent Hill 2, which emphasized psychological horror through intricate puzzles and suspenseful exploration, Silent Hill f leans more toward action, requiring players to face off against terrifying bosses throughout the narrative.

Series Producer Motoi Okamoto explained in Japanese that the team aimed to "incorporate the excitement and satisfaction of action mechanics," adding that with NeoBards Entertainment leading development, he trusts this fresh direction will be expertly executed.
He elaborated, "Crunchy, responsive action games are gaining traction among younger gamers today, so integrating such features will likely attract those who are new to the series."
Game Director Al Yang reinforced this by stating the team wanted to innovate, not replicate Silent Hill 2. "Building on Okamoto’s point, we aren't looking to reproduce Silent Hill 2, nor can we simply keep making clones. To avoid rehashing what's already been done, we chose to enhance the action elements."

Okamoto echoed this sentiment in a June 4 PlayStation Blog post, describing Silent Hill f as a "groundbreaking new installment." He noted, "The game introduces original combat mechanics. Encounters are as demanding as the personal struggles protagonist Hinako must face. Combat is more melee-focused and action-heavy compared to last year’s Silent Hill 2."
While new mechanics are introduced to welcome newcomers—positioning the game as an ideal starting point—Writer Ryukishi07 characterized the experience as a rich blend of psychological and supernatural horror, ensuring the series' frightening legacy not only continues but intensifies.
Fans Draw Parallels Between Silent Hill f Gameplay and Soulslikes

As early footage from the game’s initial five hours circulates online through various media, players have taken note of the revamped combat, sparking lively community debates. A recent Game Informer hands-on preview suggested Silent Hill f carries "hints of the subgenre popularized by From Software," alluding to Soulslike influences.
Soulslikes, a subgenre of action RPGs recognized for high difficulty and deliberate, stamina-based combat, were largely defined by FromSoftware’s Souls series. With Silent Hill f integrating similar mechanics in its combat and boss encounters, fans are split regarding KONAMI's new direction.

On Reddit, users debated whether comparing the game to Soulslikes is appropriate. Several pointed out that the term "soulslike" is "often used too loosely," arguing that "not every game with a dodge mechanic qualifies as one."
Other players, however, welcomed the change, believing it will add complexity to Silent Hill’s melee system and keep combat dynamic. That said, some remain cautious, concerned that while the previews appear entertaining, the heightened action might dilute the horror atmosphere.

Despite divided opinions on gameplay, the community is eager to explore this new horror experience. With acclaimed horror novelist Ryukishi07 penning a spine-tingling story and NeoBards Entertainment shaping combat to match the game’s tone, KONAMI has assembled a creative team poised to deliver the franchise’s signature scares in a Japanese setting.
Silent Hill f releases on September 25 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Those who pre-order the Digital Deluxe Edition can start playing on September 23. For ongoing updates about Silent Hill f, check out our article below!
