Bethesda Unveils First Patch for Oblivion Remastered, Performance Boost in Patch 2

Author : Thomas Update:May 31,2026

Bethesda has unveiled details of the first post-launch patch for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, now available in Steam beta as of June 5, 2025, with a full rollout across all platforms scheduled for June 11.

Titled Update 1.1, this is the initial release of two planned patches rolling out over the coming weeks, according to Bethesda’s official Steam announcement. Both updates will debut on Steam Beta first before launching widely.

This first patch zeroes in on quest fixes, critical bugs, and quality-of-life improvements. The second update, still in development, will prioritize performance optimization—a crucial step given the game’s current technical shortcomings. Bethesda has promised further details on the performance update “when we are able.”

A performance overhaul is urgently needed. While Oblivion Remastered has seen a triumphant launch—surpassing 4 million players and earning a ‘very positive’ rating on Steam—persistent performance issues have marred the experience, especially on consoles.

As highlighted by Digital Foundry, the Unreal Engine 5-powered remaster suffers from widespread technical flaws across all console platforms. In his analysis, DF’s Thomas Morgan stated:

No platform is spared of issues: whether it's PS5, PS5 Pro, or either Xbox Series machine, all struggle with traversal hitches while roaming the open world. Secondly, there's major sub-60fps frame-rates, where I've also discovered that performance slowly degrades with more playing time — quite possibly down to a memory leak. And finally, software freezes are the icing on the cake, with all PlayStation and Xbox platforms crashing to the system menu on loading a save one too many times.

In practice, this means that extended gameplay sessions—referred to as a “charged” playthrough—lead to worsening performance. Save file cycling introduces additional bugs, including a strange camera glitch that raises the view too high when riding a horse. Resetting the game can temporarily fix this anomaly.

“It's a dire position for any remaster to be in and developer Virtuos needs to address the game's stability - the crashes - as a priority,” Morgan emphasized.

The assessment for PC performance is equally harsh, labeled “dire” by Digital Foundry. For a full breakdown, we recommend checking out DF’s complete analysis.

Among the highlights of Update 1.1 are the addition of the ToggleHudVisibility and ShowHud console commands—ideal for capturing clean screenshots of the game’s stunning visuals. Other key fixes include resolving the Local Map not appearing in interior spaces, correcting a blank map display on opening, and fixing the first-person camera misalignment that placed the view above the player’s head.

Developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, Oblivion Remastered delivers a comprehensive visual and mechanical overhaul. The game runs at 4K resolution and 60 FPS, with sweeping enhancements to character creation, leveling systems, combat animations, and UI design. New dialogue, a refined third-person perspective, and advanced lip-sync technology further elevate the experience. So extensive are the changes that some fans argue the title deserves to be called a full remake. Bethesda, however, has clarified its decision to classify it as a remaster.

Shortly after launch, players began advising newcomers to tackle the Kvatch questline early, before level scaling makes it excessively difficult. Additionally, reports have surfaced of players discovering exploits to leave Cyrodiil and explore distant regions like Valenwood, Skyrim, and even Hammerfell—the speculated setting of The Elder Scrolls VI.
