Bloodborne Fans Revisit Yharnam on 10th Anniversary Amid Sequel Hopes

Author : Natalie Update:May 04,2025

Today marks a significant milestone as Bloodborne celebrates its 10th anniversary. Fans across the globe are coming together to commemorate this occasion by participating in another "Return to Yharnam" community event, a testament to the enduring legacy of FromSoftware's PlayStation 4 masterpiece, which launched on March 24, 2015. This game not only solidified FromSoftware's reputation as a top-tier developer but also received widespread critical and commercial success, leading many to anticipate a sequel or remaster akin to the follow-ups in the Dark Souls series.

Despite the fervent requests from fans for more Bloodborne—whether a current-gen remaster, a full sequel, or at least a next-gen update to enable 60fps gameplay—Sony has remained silent. This lack of follow-up continues to baffle the gaming community, making it one of the most perplexing decisions in the industry.

Earlier this year, some insight into this mystery was provided by Shuhei Yoshida, a PlayStation legend who left Sony. In an interview with Kinda Funny Games, Yoshida shared his theory on the absence of a Bloodborne follow-up. He emphasized that this was merely his personal opinion and not a reflection of any insider knowledge or current plans at Sony. Yoshida suggested that Hidetaka Miyazaki, the head of FromSoftware and creator of Bloodborne, might be reluctant to let anyone else work on the project due to his deep personal attachment to it. Yoshida speculated that Miyazaki's busy schedule, following the success of Elden Ring and other projects, might also play a role in the lack of progress on a Bloodborne sequel or remaster.

Miyazaki's career has indeed been on an upward trajectory since Bloodborne. He directed Dark Souls 3, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and the critically acclaimed Elden Ring, which is set to receive a multiplayer spin-off. Despite his success, Miyazaki has often sidestepped questions about Bloodborne, citing that FromSoftware does not own the IP. However, he did acknowledge last year that the game could benefit from being released on more modern hardware.

In the absence of official updates, the community has taken matters into their own hands. Modders have attempted to enhance the Bloodborne experience, but Sony has responded with takedown notices, as seen with the efforts of mod creators like Lance McDonald and Lilith Walther. Meanwhile, technological advancements in PS4 emulation have allowed fans to experience Bloodborne at 60fps on PC, a development covered by Digital Foundry. This breakthrough might have prompted Sony's aggressive stance on unauthorized modifications.

As Sony remains unresponsive to inquiries about Bloodborne's future, fans continue to organize community events like the "Return to Yharnam" initiative. Today's event encourages players to start fresh characters, engage with as many co-op partners and invaders as possible, and leave messages in-game to signify their participation in this community-driven celebration. With no official word on a sequel or remaster, these fan-led efforts may be the closest the community gets to revisiting the haunting world of Yharnam.
