Digital Foundry's Thomas Morgan recently conducted a thorough evaluation of Bloodborne running on the ShadPS4 emulator, focusing on the game's performance and the enhancements provided by modders. For his tests, Morgan utilized the ShadPS4 0.5.1 build developed by diegolix29, which is derived from a custom branch by developer raphaelthegreat. This specific build was selected after testing multiple versions and proved to be the most effective on a PC equipped with an AMD Ryzen 7 5700X processor and a GeForce RTX 4080 GPU.
To enhance the visual experience and address certain graphical issues, Morgan suggested the installation of the Vertex Explosion Fix mod. This mod effectively eliminates visual artifacts such as stretched or mispositioned polygons, though it does disable the character's facial customization feature at the game's start. Importantly, Morgan noted that no other mods are necessary as the emulator itself integrates all essential enhancements. Users can access a dedicated menu within the emulator to manage features like enabling 60 fps support, scaling the resolution up to 4K, or turning off chromatic aberration.
In terms of performance, Morgan reported that Bloodborne mostly maintained a smooth 60 fps, despite experiencing occasional stutters. He also experimented with higher resolutions, including 1440p and 1800p, which significantly enhanced image detail but led to performance degradation and more frequent crashes. Consequently, Morgan advises that for optimal performance and stability, players should run Bloodborne on the ShadPS4 emulator at resolutions of 1080p or 1152p.
Morgan praised the ShadPS4 team's efforts, highlighting the remarkable feat of emulating a PS4 game. He concluded that while Bloodborne performs admirably on the emulator, there are still some technical challenges to overcome.
