According to reports, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach creator Hideo Kojima made significant changes midway through development because early playtest feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and he aims to avoid creating "mainstream" content.
This insight comes from Yoann "Woodkid" Lemoine, who collaborated with Kojima on the game's soundtrack. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Lemoine discussed the creative process and the unique challenges of composing for a dynamic medium that evolves as players advance.
He also recalled Kojima's concern when players enjoyed Death Stranding 2 too much. Kojima reportedly stated, "That means something is wrong. We need to make adjustments."
Woodkid explained, "There was a critical point, roughly halfway through development, when Kojima approached me and said, 'We have a problem.'"
"He continued, 'To be completely honest, our player testing sessions have yielded results that are too favorable. The players like it excessively. That indicates an issue; we must implement changes.' Consequently, he revised parts of the script and altered key gameplay moments, believing the initial version lacked emotional impact and wasn't provocative enough."
Kojima elaborated on his philosophy, stating, "Universal approval suggests a work is mainstream and conventional — it's been pre-digested for mass consumption."
"I don’t want that," Kojima told Lemoine. "My goal is for players to gradually appreciate elements they initially disliked, as that’s where genuine affection develops."
Woodkid described this as a valuable lesson, inspiring him to create art that challenges and moves audiences rather than simply aiming to please.
