SloClap, developer of Rematch, has addressed player concerns regarding the absence of crossplay functionality at launch. The studio acknowledged it should have informed players sooner about this limitation.
Rematch - a 5v5 multiplayer arcade soccer game developed by the creators of Sifu and Absolver - recently concluded a massively successful beta with 1.9 million participants across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. However, disappointment grew when crossplay's absence was confirmed mere hours before early access began.
In a launch day blog post shared with media, SloClap explained their technical hurdles with crossplay implementation.
"Taking Responsibility for Communication"
"We recognize many players anticipated cross-platform play from launch," the studio stated. "Despite our best efforts as first-time crossplay developers, unforeseen technical challenges prevented timely implementation."
The post continued: "We failed to communicate this delay promptly and sincerely apologize for the frustration caused. Crossplay remains our top priority alongside critical bug fixes - we're working diligently to deliver this feature."
The developer revealed they've already established basic crossplay functionality but require additional development time for interface implementation, debugging, polishing, and platform certification processes.
Ongoing Technical Improvements
SloClap also detailed efforts to resolve performance issues that emerged during early access, including:
- Gameplay-affecting lag and stuttering
- Server-client synchronization problems
- Unexpected ball and character movement
The team is actively addressing game-breaking bugs causing crashes, post-goal freezes, and menu accessibility issues.
Future Development Roadmap
Beyond immediate fixes, SloClap outlined four key development focuses:
- Core gameplay refinements
- Competitive features including tournaments and leaderboards
- Social enhancements like spectating and teammate rematching
- Casual play options including AI bot integration
The studio emphasized their smaller team size means these updates will require significant development time, asking players for patience.
Despite launch challenges, Rematch maintains positive reception on Steam with concurrent player counts steadily climbing as the game enters its first weekend.
