Argentine director Andy Muschietti (It, The Flash) offers a much-needed update on the Shadow of the Colossus movie adaptation. Sony Pictures announced the live-action project over a decade ago, in 2009, with the game's creator, Fumito Ueda, on board. Josh Trank was initially attached to direct but later withdrew due to scheduling conflicts, paving the way for Muschietti.
This adaptation joins other recent Sony game adaptations announced at CES 2025, including a Helldivers movie (despite Starship Troopers' thematic similarities), a Horizon Zero Dawn film, and a Ghost of Tsushima animated project.
During an interview on Radio TU's La Baulera del Coso, Muschietti confirmed that the Shadow of the Colossus film is "not an abandoned project." He attributed the extended development time to factors beyond creative control, specifically highlighting the challenges posed by the IP's popularity and the resulting budgetary considerations. Muschietti confirmed the existence of multiple scripts, indicating he has a preferred version.
Shadow of the Colossus Film Adaptation Gets Update From Director
While other games, such as Capcom's 2024 Dragon's Dogma 2, have drawn inspiration from Shadow of the Colossus, Sony's original remains a beloved classic. Muschietti, while admitting he's not a "big gamer," calls the game a "masterpiece" and states he's played it multiple times.
Ueda, the visionary behind the original game, has since founded his own studio, GenDesign. Their newly announced sci-fi title (revealed at The Game Awards 2024) hints at a similar sense of isolated grandeur. Despite high-definition remakes culminating with the 2018 PlayStation 4 release, Shadow of the Colossus' legacy continues its journey, now aiming for the big screen to captivate both existing fans and newcomers alike.
