Civilization 7's troubled launch on Steam has become increasingly evident. The strategy sequel has faced player retention challenges on Valve's platform since its February release, currently holding a 'Mixed' rating in Steam user reviews. Despite multiple patches from developer Firaxis aimed at improving reception, Civ 7 now finds itself in the surprising position of attracting fewer concurrent Steam players than both Civilization 6 and the decade-and-a-half-old Civilization 5.
A Multiplatform Strategy With PC Struggles
While the Steam metrics tell one story, Civilization 7's release extended beyond PC to PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch platforms (with a Switch 2 version leveraging new Joy-Con mouse controls currently in development). However, given Civilization's historical strength as a PC franchise, Civ 7's underwhelming Steam performance raises concerns.
Surprisingly, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed enthusiasm about Civ 7's performance during a pre-earnings interview with IGN. "I'm thrilled with Civ 7 so far," Zelnick stated. "While we encountered initial challenges, our Firaxis team has made excellent progress addressing them. There's still work ahead, but I'm confident we'll deliver an experience that satisfies players and ultimately achieves commercial success."
The Long Game: Civilization's Enduring Sales Cycle
Zelnick emphasized the franchise's characteristic long-term sales trajectory, which historically sees initial skepticism give way to sustained popularity. "Every Civilization release brings changes that initially concern our dedicated fanbase," he explained. "But time consistently proves these innovations enhance the experience. We anticipate Civ 7 will follow this pattern."
The CEO acknowledged ongoing development efforts: "We absolutely faced early challenges - some resolved, others still being addressed." His comments reference widespread player feedback about Civ 7's interface limitations, repetitive map generation, and perceived missing features at launch.

Revolutionary Age Mechanics Meet Fan Resistance
Civ 7's most dramatic departure introduces a three-Age system (Antiquity, Exploration, Modern) where all players simultaneously transition between eras. These shifts require selecting new civilizations while preserving chosen Legacy bonuses - a radical departure from series tradition that Zelnick believes will ultimately win over skeptics.
While Take-Two hasn't disclosed sales figures, their financial reports mention audience expansion strategies including the recent Meta Quest VR port and planned Switch 2 release. These moves suggest confidence in Civ 7's long-term potential despite its turbulent start.
