Capcom is harnessing the power of generative AI to revolutionize the creation of in-game environments, addressing the challenge of generating "hundreds of thousands" of unique ideas needed for game development. As the costs of video game production continue to escalate, game publishers are increasingly turning to AI tools to streamline processes and reduce expenses. Notably, Call of Duty has reportedly utilized AI-generated content, such as an "AI-generated cosmetic" for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in late 2023, and fans have accused Activision of employing generative AI for a loading screen in the previous year. Additionally, EA has emphasized AI as being at "the very core" of its business strategy.
In a recent interview with Google Cloud Japan, Kazuki Abe, a technical director at Capcom with experience on major titles like Monster Hunter: World and Exoprimal, discussed the company's innovative approach to integrating AI into its development workflow. Abe highlighted the labor-intensive nature of generating countless unique ideas for game elements, such as televisions, which require distinct designs, logos, and shapes. He noted that, including unused concepts, the development team often needs to produce "hundreds of thousands of ideas" for each game.
To enhance efficiency, Abe developed a system where generative AI can analyze various game design documents and generate ideas autonomously. This AI-driven process not only accelerates development but also provides feedback for continuous refinement of the output. His prototype, which leverages multiple AI models including Google Gemini Pro, Gemini Flash, and Imagen, has garnered positive feedback from Capcom's internal development teams. Implementing this AI model promises to "reduce costs significantly" while simultaneously enhancing the quality of the output.
Currently, Capcom's use of AI is confined to this specific system, ensuring that other crucial aspects of game development, such as ideation, gameplay, programming, and character design, remain the domain of human creativity and expertise.
