In the upcoming game *Dune: Awakening*, sandworms are set to play a pivotal role as a natural force within the game's ecosystem, rather than as controllable tools for players. Unlike the scenario in Frank Herbert's iconic novels where characters could summon these colossal creatures with a device known as a thumper, *Dune: Awakening* diverges from this mechanic. Instead, the developers have designed sandworms as non-player characters (NPCs) with predetermined patrol routes, schedules, and behaviors integrated into the game's engine.

Players won't have the ability to call upon a sandworm to disrupt enemy bases strategically. However, should a sandworm be in the vicinity, players may attempt to attract its attention through actions like moving actively across the sand or deploying a thumper. Yet, these actions do not guarantee the worm's appearance in the desired area.
Another significant departure from Herbert's narrative and the broader *Dune* universe is the absence of sandworm riding, a hallmark of the Fremen culture. The developers have noted that this decision stems from pressure by the filmmakers of the *Dune* cinematic universe. While the initial release of *Dune: Awakening* will not include this feature, there's a possibility that future post-launch updates might introduce additional content related to Fremen culture, including the much-anticipated worm-riding mechanics. However, no assurances have been made regarding the addition of this iconic activity.
*Dune: Awakening* is slated to launch on PC on May 20th, with console versions to follow subsequently.
