The Atomfall Developers Knew It Would Be Compared to Fallout as Soon as It Was Revealed, Average Playthrough Around 25 Hours

At first glance, Atomfall might seem like a Fallout game—a post-apocalyptic adventure set in a British, rather than American, wasteland. The first-person perspective, post-nuclear setting, and alt-history backdrop certainly draw parallels to the Fallout franchise. Rebellion's art director, Ryan Greene, acknowledges these comparisons, noting that the team anticipated them from the game's initial reveal. He explains that the similarities stem from the shared theme of survival in a post-apocalyptic world, a genre where Fallout has set a high benchmark.

However, Atomfall is far more than a British Fallout clone. As IGN highlighted last August, Atomfall offers a unique and compelling experience. Greene emphasizes that the Fallout comparison is misleading, stating that gameplay quickly reveals Atomfall's distinct identity. He points out that Rebellion, an independent studio behind the Sniper Elite series, is not Bethesda, and Atomfall, while ambitious for the studio, isn't aiming for the scale of an Elder Scrolls or Fallout title. Greene clarifies that Atomfall is a version 1.0 game, acknowledging the achievement of the teams behind the larger franchises.

Greene estimates an average playthrough at around 25 hours, though completionists could significantly extend that time. IGN's recent hands-on preview showcased the game's unique flexibility; Simon Cardy completed a playthrough by killing every character he encountered. Greene confirms this is entirely possible, with multiple game endings accommodating various playstyles. The game adapts to player choices, offering alternative paths to completion even if key characters are eliminated.

Unlike traditional RPGs, Atomfall doesn't feature a linear main quest or side quests. Instead, the narrative unfolds as a complex web of interconnected stories. Even if a player cuts off one narrative thread, alternative paths usually lead back to the overarching mystery. Greene also confirms that a pacifist playthrough is feasible, having himself progressed significantly without killing anyone.
